James David Vance (born August 2, 1984) is an American politician, author and venture capitalist serving as the 50th vice president of the United States. He was born and raised in Middletown, Ohio, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 2003 and served as a military journalist in public affairs until 2007.[1]

After his service Vance earned a bachelor's degree from Ohio State University and a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. He worked briefly in corporate law and then at Mithril Capital, a venture capital firm. His 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy drew wide attention and was adapted into a film in 2020.[1]

Vance was elected to the U.S. Senate from Ohio in 2022 and resigned the seat before being inaugurated as vice president. He was selected as Donald Trump's running mate in the 2024 presidential election and took office on January 20, 2025, becoming the first Marine Corps veteran to serve as vice president. He has also served as finance chair of the Republican National Committee.[1][2][3]
