John Randolph Thune (born January 7, 1961) is an American politician who has represented South Dakota in the United States Senate since 2005. Born in Pierre, he graduated from Biola University and the University of South Dakota.[1]

Thune was first elected to the U.S. House in 1996 and served three terms representing South Dakota's at-large district. He ran for the Senate in 2002 and narrowly lost, then ran again in 2004 and won, and has been reelected in 2010, 2016 and 2022.[1]

During his Senate tenure Thune served as Republican chief deputy whip, chair of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, Republican Conference chair, majority whip and minority whip. He has served as Senate majority leader and Senate Republican leader since 2025.[1][3][4]
