Roy Asberry Cooper III (born June 13, 1957) is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 75th governor of North Carolina from 2017 to 2025. Born and raised in Eastern North Carolina, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979.[1]

Cooper began his career as a lawyer and was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1986. He was appointed to the North Carolina Senate in 1991 and served there until 2001. He was elected state attorney general in 2000 and reelected in 2004, 2008 and 2012, serving almost 16 years — the longest tenure in the state's history.[1]

He was first elected governor in 2016, narrowly defeating Republican incumbent Pat McCrory to become the first challenger to unseat a sitting North Carolina governor, and was reelected in 2020. As governor he negotiated statewide Medicaid expansion. He is the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in North Carolina in the 2026 election.[1][2]
