Gavin Christopher Newsom (born October 10, 1967) is an American politician and businessman serving as governor of California since 2019. Born and raised in San Francisco, he graduated from Santa Clara University in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in political science.[1]

Before entering politics Newsom founded the PlumpJack Group, a hospitality and winery business that grew to manage 23 businesses. Mayor Willie Brown appointed him to San Francisco's Parking and Traffic Commission in 1996 and to the Board of Supervisors in 1997; he was first elected to the board in 1998, elected mayor in 2003 and reelected in 2007.[1]

Newsom was elected lieutenant governor of California in 2010 and reelected in 2014, then elected governor in 2018 and reelected in 2022. As governor he has focused on infrastructure, housing, climate, gun control and LGBTQ rights, and he oversaw the passage of Proposition 50 on congressional redistricting.[1][2][3]
