Gretchen Whitmer
The 49th governor of Michigan, in office since 2019. A Democrat, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and in the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015, where she became the chamber's first female Democratic leader. She was elected governor in 2018 and reelected in 2022, and served as a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2021 to 2025.

Gretchen Esther Whitmer (born August 23, 1971) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the 49th governor of Michigan since 2019. Born in Lansing and raised in Grand Rapids, she earned a bachelor's degree in communication from Michigan State University in 1993 and a Juris Doctor from the same university in 1998.[1]

Whitmer was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2000 and won a special election to the state Senate in 2006, serving there until 2015. From 2011 to 2015 she was the Michigan Senate's first female Democratic leader, and in 2016 she served for six months as prosecutor for Ingham County.[1]
She was elected governor in 2018 and reelected in 2022. As governor she has focused on healthcare and infrastructure legislation, and she delivered the Democratic response to the 2020 State of the Union Address. She also served as a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee from January 2021 to February 2025.[1][2][3]
