Hakeem Sekou Jeffries (born August 4, 1970) is an American politician and attorney who has represented New York's 8th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2013. He was born in Brooklyn and raised in the Crown Heights neighborhood, and graduated with honors from New York University School of Law.[1]

Jeffries worked as a corporate lawyer before entering elected office, serving in the New York State Assembly from 2007 to 2012 for a Brooklyn-anchored district. He was first elected to Congress in 2012 and chaired the House Democratic Caucus from 2019 to 2023.[1]

In November 2022 the House Democratic Caucus unanimously elected Jeffries to succeed Nancy Pelosi as its leader, making him the first African American to lead a party in either chamber of Congress. He has served as House minority leader since 2023.[1][3][4]
