A Republican, he represented Florida in the U.S. Senate from 2011 to 2025 and served as speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. He is the first Latino to serve as secretary of state.

Marco Antonio Rubio (born May 28, 1971) is an American politician, attorney and diplomat serving as the 72nd United States secretary of state. Born and raised in Miami, he attended the University of Florida and the University of Miami's law school.[1]

Rubio served as a West Miami city commissioner in the 1990s and was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000, becoming Republican majority leader and then speaker for two years from November 2006. He left the state legislature in 2008 due to term limits and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, winning further terms in 2016 and 2022. He launched a presidential campaign in April 2015 and suspended it in March 2016.[1]

President-elect Donald Trump announced Rubio as his nominee for secretary of state in November 2024. The Senate confirmed him unanimously and he took office on January 21, 2025. On May 1, 2025 he additionally became acting national security advisor while remaining secretary of state, a dual role last held in the 1970s.[1][2]
