2026 General Election Voter Registration Deadlines — Most States Close Registration Oct. 5-26 Before Nov. 3

The 2026 general election falls on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, but the deadline to register to vote in it does not. Registration rules are set state by state, and the practical effect is that the last day to register ranges from roughly a month before the election to Election Day itself. Most states close advance registration somewhere between October 5 and October 26, 2026. Voters who assume a single national cutoff — or who rely on a friend's deadline in another state — are the ones most likely to be caught out.^[4][5]

Several states have published their dates through official election offices. Florida's Division of Elections sets the registration deadline at October 5, 2026, with a mandatory statewide early voting window of October 24-31 and a vote-by-mail request deadline of October 22. The North Carolina State Board of Elections sets its deadline at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2026, while noting that voters who miss it may still be able to register and vote during the early voting period.^[2][6]

The Virginia Department of Elections lists October 23, 2026 as the registration cutoff, paired with an unusually long in-person early voting period that opens September 18 and runs to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, including several designated weekend days. The Maryland State Board of Elections has early voting centers open October 22-29, 2026 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, with Election Day polls keeping the same hours.^[1][3]

The advance deadline is not the final word everywhere. Research compiled by the Center for Election Innovation & Research indicates that 22 states plus the District of Columbia offer some form of same-day or Election Day registration, and that North Dakota requires no voter registration at all. In several additional states that maintain an advance deadline for mail and online registration, voters can still register in person during the early voting period. That patchwork means missing a deadline is recoverable in much of the country — but not all of it.^[4]

A further complication is that some states apply different deadlines depending on how a voter registers. Analysis of the 2026 calendar found that while 38 states use a single uniform deadline across all methods, ten states and DC set separate cutoffs for online, mail and in-person registration, with online deadlines in several states extending past the others. Voters registering by mail should also account for postmark-versus-receipt rules, which differ by state and can effectively move a deadline several days earlier.
