Artemis II — First Crewed Lunar Flyby Since Apollo

Artemis II was the first crewed mission of NASA's Artemis programme. It did not land on the Moon: it was a flyby on a free-return trajectory, looping around the Moon and back to Earth. It launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 1 April 2026 and splashed down in the Pacific on 10 April (local time) after a ten-day flight.

Re-entry and what it was for
On the way home the Orion capsule was reported to have re-entered the atmosphere at around Mach 33, passing through a communications blackout of about six minutes as plasma formed around the capsule. All four astronauts on board were confirmed to be in good health.
The flight was described as a verification step for Artemis III, the planned crewed lunar landing. It is reported to have tested the life-support, communications and re-entry systems needed for crewed deep-space flight with an actual crew aboard.
