Ig Nobel Prize 2026 Ceremony: September 3 in Zurich, First Time Outside the US in 35 Years

The Ig Nobel Prizes honor research that, in the organizers' framing, first makes people laugh and then makes them think. Since the awards began in 1991 the ceremony had been a fixture of the Boston area, staged over the years at Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston University. The 2026 edition breaks that continuity: the 36th ceremony is held in Zurich, Switzerland, the first time the event has taken place outside the United States.^[2][4]

The stated reason was practical rather than ceremonial: organizers concluded that many international participants, including prospective winners and the journalists who cover the event, would face difficulty or discomfort entering the United States. The Zurich edition is produced with institutions of the ETH Domain, the Swiss federal institute network, together with the University of Zurich. In-person attendance was ticketed on a tiered scale, from a 59-franc student rate through an 89-franc regular admission to premium tiers at 250 and 500 francs. Tickets went on sale May 12, 2026 and the regular tier sold out within days, with organizers noting that additional seats could be released later. Because the hall capacity is finite and the stream is not, the live webcast is the route most of the audience takes.^[1]

Organizers also publish guidance for group watch parties, which have historically been held in many countries around the ceremony's start time. The practical detail that trips up readers is the clock, not the calendar. For the entire prior history of the event the ceremony ran on Boston time, meaning an evening start in the eastern United States. In 2026 the 7:00 pm start is Central European Summer Time, which in early September sits six hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time.
